Knot Conference
INTERTWINING DESIGN AND COMMUNITY
I was honored to be asked to speak at the first ever Knot Conference! We explored the intricate bond between design and community, empowering participants to effect meaningful change.
Hosted by the Junior Design Class of Anderson University, we gathered as a community of students, professionals, family, and friends, to explore ways in which design is utilized on a personal and city wide level. During the conference, speakers presented new ways of understanding design, diving deep into ones own story and childhood passions to inspire todays work. We talked about feeling “stuck” and that rut you can fall into when it comes to continuously pursuing a creative passion.
I was asked to speak on behalf of my experiences at The Landmark Project and Dapper Ink in a panel discussion about what needs and opportunities there are within the community for creative individuals to contribute their gifts to.
Here were our key talking points:
Do you have any examples in your life where a lack of creativity or good design impacted the community negatively?
How can our community celebrate diversity of origin, thought, etc. while still cultivating harmony?
What need/opportunity is there in Anderson for creatives to contribute their gifts to better the community?
What role do public spaces, such as parks, libraries, and community centers, play in fostering creativity and facilitating artistic expression within a community?
How does creativity contribute to the vibrance and well-being of Anderson?
My biggest takeaway - it all comes back to story. Your story, my story, the story of the places we’ve been and the places we inhabit now. Our experiences allow us to learn how to cultivate change.
Use these questions to inspire more conversations and follow the Knot Conference for updates on the event!
